Day 3 - Montevideo, Uruguay

Day 3

Montevideo, Uruguay

A short overnight sail to Montevideo arriving in the morning. Got a tip from our server the night before that there is a Meat Market just across the road from the dock. Didn't know exactly what to expect. It turned out that they are not just selling meats, they are also providing meals with all kinds of meat products cooked in a wood stove. It was early and the market was just setting up. On our way back a little after noon, we were amazed by the busyness of the place. Where do they all come from to this very edge of the city?

We walked along the old town along the main walking street. It is nice with many shops and street venders along the way but also has many vacant buildings. The tourist and the cargo terminal  businesses must be not quite enough.

The old town is connected by a number of plazas. We did not see a Plaza Mayor here (every town seems to have one) but walked through Plaza Zabala and Plaza Constitucion to Plaza Independencia that leads to the more modern and more busy part of Montevideo. This is not quite the modern downtown but we got a very nice introduction of the place.

People here are very nice, often very polite even when this group of slow-moving tourists blocked their way. We were offered help when we huddled around the map. We didn't need it but grateful for the good intention.

The highlight of the day was the discovery of the cannabis shop supplying kits for do-it-yourselfers.
